Spring Poetry series April 5th in the store

Nearly every year we have hosted a Spring Poetry series that features poets from all across Connecticut. I think most of you know our fondness for poetry in all it's forms and we are happy to continue on Friday April 5th at 7pm for an evening of poetry at the store. The books for each poet are listed below- feel free to order them for signing.

The April 5th poets at 7pm are:

Amy Nawrocki:  As a poet, Nawrocki is the author of six poetry collections and the recipient of numerous awards including honors from The Hamden Arts Commission, The Connecticut Poetry Society, New Millennium Writings, and The Connecticut Center for the Book. She has performed her work on campus and across the region in bookstores, libraries, and poetry festivals. Her most recent collection, Mouthbrooders, was a finalist for the 2020 Connecticut Book Award. Her nonfiction book, The Comet’s Tail: A Memoir of No Memory, was a 2018 Foreword Review INDIES finalist for best memoir and has been awarded a Gold Medal for the Living Now Mind-Body-Spirit Awards.

In addition to her work in poetry, Professor Nawrocki is the co-author of five books that focus on the history and culture of Connecticut. She has lectured numerous times on Connecticut's culture and its traditions and is a regular contributor to Edible Nutmeg and The Wayfarer.

Jack Powers is the author of EVERYBODY'S VAGUELY FAMILIAR. His poems and essays have appeared in THE SOUTHERN REVIEW, THE CORTLAND REVIEW, THE NEW YORK TIMES and elsewhere. He won the 2015 and 2012 CONNECTICUT RIVER REVIEW Poetry Contests and was a finalist for the 2013 and 2014 RATTLE Poetry Prizes. He and his wife, Anne, live in Fairfield CT and have three children scattered across the country. He recently retired from Joel Barlow High School after 38 years of teaching specialeducation, English and math.

Laurel S. Peterson is an English professor and served as the inaugural Poet Laureate of Norwalk, Connecticut, for three years. She edited the poetry collection Oysterville: Poems. and serves on the editorial board of the literary journal, Inkwell. She is the author of two poetry chapbooks, That's the Way the Music Sounds and Talking to the Mirror and the full length poetry collection Do You Expect Your Art to Answer? She also co-edited a collection of essays on women's justice titled (Re)Interpretations: The Shapes of Justice in Women's Experience. Shadow Notes is book one of The Clara Montague Mystery series and it will be followed by The Fallen in fall of 2020. She and her husband live in Connecticut.

Van Hartmann is Professor Emeritus in literature and film studies at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York. He received an A.B. in History from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals. He has published three books of poems: Shiva Dancing (Texture Press, 2007), Riptide (Texture Press, 2016), and Afloat (Texture Press, 2023).  His chapbook, Between What Is and What Is Not (The Last Automat Press) was published in 2010. He lives in Norwalk, Connecticut, with his wife, fellow writer and English professor Laurel Peterson.

Rick Magee: Rick Magee, a native Californian, joined the Sacred Heart faculty in 2003. In his free time, Rick is an avid outdoorsman and competitive cyclist, and he is ranked in the top ten in local cycling competition. He is also Bethel's Poet Laureate.
